'Vertigo Sea' Tour and Conversation

Building from his work with the Black Audio Film Collective, John Akomfrah’s ‘Vertigo Sea’ (2015) sees a critique of cultural amnesia and the colonial imaginary applied to contemporary challenges such as the refugee crisis and our declining worldwide ecosystems. Shown alongside At the Graveside of Tarkovsky (2012 / 2017) – which highlights Akomfrah’s cinematic lineage – it reflects an expansive artistic practice that re-contextualises historical and contemporary footage to propose a different relationship to the past and a different sensibility for the future. Beginning with an introduction by the exhibition's curator James Clegg, this tour will open out into a conversation led by Prof. Andrew Patrizio about the central themes of Vertigo Sea and their relevance today.
